Blockchain Academic Credential Verification System
A permissioned-blockchain platform where universities issue tamper-evident credentials that an employer can verify in seconds, without the issuer being online.
The problem
Verifying a degree usually means contacting the institution and waiting. Paper and PDF certificates are easy to alter, and the check depends on the issuer answering.
What I built
- Three role-based portals: Issuer, Student Wallet and a public Verifier.
- On-chain anchoring of credential hashes and issuer signatures.
- did:ethr decentralized identity for the parties involved.
- Non-custodial login with MetaMask.
My engineering contribution
- Wrote the Solidity smart contracts and tested them with Hardhat.
- Built the React portals and their Ethers.js integration.
- Designed the issue-and-verify flow so verification never depends on the issuing institution being reachable.
Architecture and workflow
An authorised institution issues a credential from the Issuer portal.
Technical decisions
- Anchor hashes and signatures on-chain, not the credential itself, so personal data stays off the ledger.
- Non-custodial login: students keep their own keys.
- Verification reads from the chain, so it works whether or not the issuer is online.
Outcomes
- A complete issue → hold → verify flow across the three portals.
- Verification completes in seconds, independent of the issuing institution.
